Beech Grove, a small city in Indianapolis, Marion County, derives its name from the many beech trees that once bloomed over here more than a century ago. It was once a rural outpost of the Marion County. Like many small American towns, Beech Grove sprouted on the railroad boom of the mid-19^th to early 20^th century.

While Beech Grove’s growth rode on the economic currents of the times, two notable residents also loom large in the shaping and defining of Beech Grove into a notable Indianapolis city. The Indianapolis financier Francis McClintock Churchman set up a cattle farm here christened “Beech Grove Farm” while the famous poet Sarah Tittle Bolton set up her “Beech Bank” farm here. Both named their farms after the beech trees which would eventually bestow the town its “Beech Grove” name. The name gave the city some character.

It’s been briefly a company town which once had the Beech Grove shops set up by a railroad company. For much of its existence, Beech Grove was a notable railroad town. In the early decades of the railroad, it was simply known as Beech Grove Station.

More than a century later, Beech Grove still retains some beech trees. However, the once small railway town and rural outpost populated with farmlands has morphed into a thriving Indianapolis city of about 14,192 residents based on the 2010 census.

The media age in Beech Grove is 37.7 years and more than 91% of city residents are white, over 4% Hispanic or Latino while over 3% are African American. The city has close to 5900 households, 3500 of which consist of families.

In spite of being a relatively small “excluded city”, Beech Grove still retains plenty of big-city amenities. The city has a strong suburban flavor and most of its 15,000 odd residents are homeowners. The city has an eclectic mix of bars and restaurants. It also hosts a number of festivals every year. There are lots of parks to cater to its more outdoorsy residents.

Beech Grove has its school district which is the Beech Grove City Schools. The city is also served by the Franklin Township Community School Corporation. There are five schooling facilities in the city including Central Elementary, Hornet Park, South Grove Intermediate, Beech Grove Middle as well as Beech Grove High. The city has a single public library which is a subsidiary of the Indianapolis Public Library.

In spite of its relatively small size, the city accommodates various civic institutions including Kiwanis and the local Lions International chapter. There are three lodges as well as Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion posts. The Beech Grove Promoters Club has been around for close to seven decades. The city doesn’t have any local newspaper, radio or TV station at the moment. Beech Grove residents are lucky to have easy access to one of the best Italian restaurants in the area - Napoli Villa Italian Restaurant on 758 Main St. It was founded by Guerino Cento in 1962 and their original spaghetti sauce can still be found on the menu today.
