Located in Wayne Township, on the west side of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Speedway is better known for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that is located in this town and from which it derives its name. This Indianapolis enclave which has long been a popular racing destination is situated in Marion County, Indiana.

Speedway was first platted out in 1912 and then established in 1926. It started out as a planned residential suburb for the nearby industrial plants. The town was planned by the four founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway- James A. Allison, Carl G. Fisher, Arthur Newby, and Frank Wheeler. The town housed workers from Allison’s industrial plants located in the area namely, Allison Engine Company and Prest-O-Life. In a homage to its automotive provenance, Speedway was planned as a motor city. Its historic district is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The educational needs of Speedway are met by the School Town of Speedway which has six campuses in the town. The town is also served by the Speedway Public Library.
