Located only a short distance from downtown Indianapolis, Butler University is a private institution of higher learning founded in 1855. The university was named after publisher, attorney, and abolitionist Ovid Butler who was also its founder. Butler University consists of six colleges: College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the Lacy School of Business, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Communication, Jordan College of the Arts, and College of Education. Butlers University sits on a 295-acre campus and has an endowment of $220 million. The institution is situated just 8km from downtown Indianapolis.
The university currently has an enrollment of close to 4,700 students. Located in a suburban setting, it is considered a top-ranked university in the Midwest. It uses a semester-based academic calendar and has a tuition of $43,400.
The university is situated close to the Broad Ripple Village Indianapolis which has plenty of amenities in its own right including shopping areas, specialty shops, nightspots, and some of the trendiest restaurants in Indianapolis.
Butler University freshmen stay in one of the residence halls in the institution. Butler’s upperclassmen can live either in university apartments or in a residential college. The university has a prominent Greek influence and up to 35% of its undergraduates are members of Greek organizations including fraternities and sororities. The first fraternity in the university was established as far back as 1859 and the first sorority came into existence in 1874. Today the university consists of seven fraternities.
There are over 60 undergraduate majors at Butler University. The university also has an honors program for its most motivated students. The institution also has a study abroad program connecting students to more than 40 countries across the world. The university has some landmark buildings including Irwin Library, designed by Minoru Yamasaki, the famous architect who also behind the WTC building in NYC.
