Nora Indianapolis is located on the far northern side of Indy. Nora is the birthplace of the renowned Monon Trail & Greenway. The neighborhood is home to the North Central High School features huge lots, and old trees. In the Nora community, there are six commercial districts, which are Nora Plaza, Greenbriar Plaza, and The Fashion Mall at Keystone.
Back in 1871 was when the name Nora first came into being for this region. During this time, the postmaster appointed for this area was a Swedish immigrant, Peter Lawson, who also owned a grocery store located on the southwest corner of Westfield Boulevard and 86th Street. The area was named by Lawson himself after the name of his home parish in Sweden. On March 29, 1828, he was born as Per Israelsson in Blexbergstorp, Nora parish, Örebro County Sweden. Later in 1854, he immigrated to the US and started living in Washington Township, Marion County by 1860. In the year 1861, he became one of the founding members of the Union Church Washington Township.
In the 1880s, Nora IN was home to only about 150 people. However, by the mid-1900s, it became quite populated. In 1958, Nora Plaza Shopping Center was established, and recently, the center became a Whole Foods. Three years later, the city witnessed an opening of a new post office. In 1967, Nora Community Council was established, which soon became an important part of Indianapolis under Unigov.
Since Nora has never been an incorporated town, there hasn’t been any permanently accepted boundaries. It is considered to be surrounded by White River on the east, Williams Creek and 79th Street on the south, Township Line Road on the west, and 96th Street as well as I-465 on the north. As of today, the most commonly accepted set of boundaries are those that the Nora-Northside Community Council has defined.
